When you are working, the last thing you are thinking about is having to be out of work due to work related injuries. This is a factor that is rarely thought about before it actually takes place. Make sure that you are prepared to cover your family’s expenses if you are out of work as well as your medical bill from your injuries.
Former Naperville firefighter, Paul Zurawski, experienced first-hand how your life can change in an instant. Zurawski sustained injuries while on the job on March 6th, 2008. Zurawski complained of back pain partnered by weakness and radiating pain into his legs which are signs that a back pain condition is more serious than a simple strain, sprain or pulled a muscle.
Zurawski sought treatment from Dr. Franklin of Rezin Orthopedics in Joliet. It is said that Dr. Franklin did not review the MRI’s and decided to treat him with physical therapy and epidural steroid injections. After Zurawski decided to get a second opinion from another orthopedic surgeon, it was discovered that Zurawski was suffering from “a very large L5-S1 right-sided disc herniation with significant compression” and urged Zurawski to have “urgent spinal surgery”.
Mr. Zurawski is able to walk after the surgery but still has troubling ongoing symptoms such as urinary dysfunction, radiating pain, and chronic pain resulting from a delay in the surgery due to Dr. Franklin’s failure to properly review the MRI. Mr. Zurawski was awarded 4.7 million dollars for his injuries resulting from the local surgeon’s neglect to properly treat his spine condition.
