A Florida man ended up being a walking miracle earlier this month as he was thrown 20 feet from a crashed vehicle and survived. The reason for this crash is all too common and at the same time, the issue is taken for granted.
On June 3rd, a driver and 4 passengers were involved in a crash at a St. Cloud toll plaza. Caught on a surveillance video, 23-year old Steven Dos Santos crashed into a concrete median coming into the toll plaza, just south of Orlando. The surveillance video shows the car driving at full speeds towards the concrete median and ejecting a 25-year old passenger. In the video, the passenger lays motionless on the ground next to one of the toll booths about 20 feet away from the crash.
All of the parties involved in the crash, the driver and 4 passengers, were treated at a hospital and released and the extent of the injuries caused by this accident was not clear.
According to reports, the driver was cited for careless driving as it was determined that he was fatigued, and it was not believed that drugs or alcohol played a role in this incident.
A study released by AAA earlier this year blamed drowsy driving for up to 10 percent of all auto accidents.
“Drowsy driving is a bigger traffic safety issue than federal estimates show,” David Yang, executive director for the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, said in a news release. “Drivers who don’t get enough sleep are putting everyone on the road at risk.”
It is said that driving while drowsy has similar effects as driving while under the influence and therefore should not be attempted. Many times it is hard to tell when you are too tired to drive. Here are some warning signs that you should not drive.
When you feel that you have reached your driving limit and just can’t go on any further, the best solution is to pull over. Whoever or whatever is waiting on you can always wait. Drowsy driving can have some of the same effects as drug while under the influence and take the risk of possibly hurting yourself or someone else is not worth the risk.
